The fact that this group of wrestlers spent so much time together travelling an unbelievably grueling schedule did bond them. The DVD captures the intimacy of backstage life. DOCUMENTARY – “BEYOND THE MAT”
This documentry focuses on the lives of professional wrestlers Terry Funk, Mick Foley (Mankind), Jake Roberts (Jake the Snake), and Darren Drozdov (Droz). As the film progresses the story of their lives unfolds, as well as we learn how the wrestling industry is not the plastic-weapons fake-slap sideshow that many have perceived it as. We are shown how moves, although not actually injuring anyone, are not fake, and extreme training is required to be able to perform the stunts without being harmed. We are also treated to interviews with the family of Mick Foley and what it is like for them to know their father literally puts his life on the line every week and how it feels to have other children call their father a “fake”. Vince McMahon, owner of World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, also makes a few appearances, responding to criticism on various wrestling situations, including, once again, his real athletes very real orginization being called fake by sources such as USA Today and various news programs.

DOCUMENTARY – “BEYOND THE MAT” [Unrated Director’s Cut!]
At first, this behind-the-scenes documentary about professional wrestling seems as if it will be an unabashed fan’s whitewash of the increasingly bizarre and popular world of “sports entertainment,” as it is known. But director Barry Blaustein (a Saturday Night Live veteran who has cowritten many of Eddie Murphy’s films) goes much deeper than you’d expect in a film that is at once entertaining and disturbing. By focusing on a trio of wrestlers who give him surprising access, Blaustein uncovers human stories that can be wrenching in their stark honesty. That’s particularly true of one-time superstar Jake “the Snake” Roberts, whose career has fallen on hard times because of a crack habit; Roberts brings Blaustein along for his first encounter in several years with his grown, estranged daughter. Blaustein also goes into the lives of Terry Funk and Mick “Mankind” Foley in ways that are both revealing and, at times, upsetting. More than just a fan’s appreciation, this is that rare documentary that shows you sides of a familiar subject you never knew existed.

DOCUMENTARY – “CHRIS BENOIT: A FIGHT TO THE DEATH” (2008/02/06 – CBC-TV)
In the pro wrestling firmament, there were few stars as big as Edmonton’s Chris Benoit. But, on June 25, 2007, Benoit’s name ricocheted around the world, suddenly more notorious than for anything he’d ever done in a wrestling ring. Inside his Atlanta, Georgia mansion were three bodies: Benoit had strangled his wife and suffocated his seven-year-old son and then killed himself. Quickly, the finger of blame was pointed at Benoit’s steroid use, so rampant in pro wrestling; the deaths, it was assumed, the result of a steroid-fuelled rage. But, an investigation into the deaths of Chris Benoit, his wife and son, by reporter Bob McKeown reveals that Benoit also may have been the victim of a physical condition brought on by years of undiagnosed concussions.

In an in-depth look into the world of the WWE, CNN investigative correspondent Drew Griffin reveals that over the last decade, wrestlers have died from heart attacks, drug overdoses, suicides and cerebral hemorrhages – at rates much higher than for the general population. Including an interview with Vince McMahon, the chairman of the WWE, Griffin reports on what the life of professional wrestlers is like inside and outside of the ring – and how some wrestlers gamble with their health to win a chance at stardom in the profession

DOCUMENTARY – “HARD KNOCKS”
Hard Knocks is a Documentary short on Professional Wrestling – an industry largely misunderstood by the general public and an industry that has been victim of ridicule time and time again. Over the past few years in particular, the professional wrestling world has been thrust into complete turmoil after the deceiving and biased portrayal of certain events by the national media. The deaths of top wrestlers in their prime as well as numerous steroid scandals have been used to kick the industry when it’s down.
Hard Knocks dives deep into this bizarre fusion of sport and theatre in order to uncover the true art of professional wrestling; blending combat and athleticism with drama and showmanship to captivate the minds of the audience, suspending any disbelief that what they are seeing is not real. Although you can hardly epitomize it as simply “real” or “fake”, there is no denying the tremendous skill and aptitude required of each performer. Yet despite this and the often harsh realities of each match, to most people, professional wrestling is a laughing stock. Director Arthur Cauty interviews wrestlers, referees and promoters alike, with world famous stars of the WWE aligning with the stars of tomorrow to voice their opinions, revealing startling truths about this illusive business. This film will shock and astound, leaving you with a new found respect for professional wrestling and the men and women who dedicate their lives and bodies to this obscure art form.

In particular, it’s about women wrestlers of the 40’s and 50’s. More specifically this film’s main characters are 6 women who worked for the notorious promoter Billy Wolfe. These ladies are the very best in the business…no one can touch them as far as pure athletic talent, feminism and good old fashioned guts and glory is concerned.

DOCUMENTARY – “THE BACKYARD” (german dubbed)
The subject of Paul Hough’s documentary is the middle-American phenomenon known as backyard wrestling, in which young men attempt to emulate the bloody high-jinks of professional wrestling using decidedly amateur means ““ homemade rings, built out of mattresses and tarp; homemade weapons, usually involving barbed wire wrapped around a club or a board; and homemade gore, here created, as the professional wrestlers do, by cutting the forehead with hidden razor blades. “The Backyard” is often hard to watch, given the level of hideous mayhem that seems to be standard for these performances. Though much of the violence is faked, there also appears to be a very high rate of masochism among the participants, as if backyard wrestling were the male symptom analogous to cutting or purging among girls. It releases tension, but at a considerable price. An astounding anthropological study of that strange tribe known as the American teenager.

The huge WCW contract”¦ financial security for his family”¦ twice the days off of his WWF schedule”¦ and a scenario that would have painted him as a sympathetic, heroic babyface standing up to the evil establishment. DOCUMENTARY – “THE UNREAL STORY OF PRO WRESTLING”
“Sure, wrestling is fake,” admits narrator Steve Allen. “We wouldn’t have it any other way.” So much for ripping the lid off pro wrestling, but fear not-there may be no dirty little secret, but there is a colorful history. Digging way back to its roots-when it was a genuine athletic event and not “a soap opera with a referee”-the slow mutation of wrestling is analyzed in generous detail from its height at the turn of the 19th century to its nadir as a carnival sideshow attraction and urban entertainment during the Depression to its phoenix-like rebirth on early television to its modern-day explosion on cable. Interviews with modern stars, such as Hulk Hogan and veterans Classy Freddie Blassie and Killer Kowalski, wrestling historians, and even college professors tackle the subject from all sides, but the commentary is secondary to the spectacle provided by a rich array of clips-everything from prissy Gorgeous George’s ringside sashays to midget wresting to a montage featuring the ubiquitous folding chair to the head. The Unreal Story of Pro Wrestling tends to emphasize the freak-show elements of the sport-which, granted, are much of the documentary’s fun-but does capture the showmanship and crazy energy that has transformed a sideshow attraction into a gonzo spectacle in a format that manages to be informative and fun at the same time.
